false truths

About the False Truths group

Alex Turnbull’s love of design began as a child. Spurred by his love of the ABC television program Mr Squiggle, he would take a pencil with him wherever he went. He was a dreamer and would constantly make shapes out of clouds and letters out of whatever he saw. It was only natural that he would one day become a designer. He continues his homage to Mr Squiggle today, doodling during the more tiresome parts of university lectures.

Another influence on Alex’s design journey was his mother’s large and exotic stamp collection. He used to pore over the pages as a child and dreamt of one day designing stamps.

Alex also has many interests outside of design.

His love for travel began early – he was born in New Zealand but emigrated to Australia when he was three. He lived in England for a year when he was twelve where he developed a fondness for soccer.

Alex is also a huge music fan, attending as many concerts as possible. Alex buys a t-shirt at every concert and is the founder the largest free hardcore and emo t-shirt zine in the Southern hemisphere.

Alex has some famous relatives: one of his ancestors is Alexander Turnbull, whom he was named after. The Alexander Turnbull Library is part of the New Zealand National Library. He is also Liberal leadership aspirant Malcolm Turnbull’s nephew. Malcolm Turnbull’s son is also named after the same Alexander Turnbull – it is a traditional Turnbull family name.

Nadia Hisheh was born in Australia, but has been on the move since she was a baby. The only state she hasn’t lived in for a period of time so far is Tasmania, but it is on her to do list for the future. Her family has been settled in Melbourne for the past 8 years after moving from their previous home in Queensland.

Nadia’s interest in design has stemmed from a family love of arts and crafts. She has always been exposed to the arts culture, with her mother being a talented painter (two time finalist of the Archibald prize) and her father being a successful ceramicist. Nadia is now in her 4th year of study in Communication Design, and enjoying every minute of it.

Besides art and design, Nadia has a fond love for animals. As well as owning a number of different pets, including cats, dogs, and a llama, Nadia also spends most of her school holidays volunteering at the local animal shelter.
